Calendar of Events
July 24, Tri Town BBQ Picnic, 5:30 - 8:00
at the South Portland home of Linden Thigpen and George Pavloff at 39 Victory Avenue, South Portland. The event is free and jointly sponsored by the city Democratic committees of South Portland, Cape Elizabeth, and Scarborough. In case of heavy rain, the rain date is scheduled for Thursday, July 31, same time and location.
This year’s gathering of Democrats from the three communities will celebrate recent electoral triumphs and gather support to help elect Democratic candidates to the White House, the US Senate and Congress and the Maine legislature this fall. Governor John Baldacci and Mrs. Baldacci, Congressman Tom Allen, US Senate candidate, and Chellie Pingree, US congressional candidate and former Maine state senator, have been invited to attend; schedules permitting they’ll be featured in the evening’s program. In addition, area legislators have been invited including Senator Lynn Bromley, Senator Phil Bartlett, Representative Larry Bliss, Senate candidate for District 7, Representatives Jane Eberle, Bryan Kaenrath, Cynthia Dill and Peggy Pendleton as well as Terry Morrison, House candidate in South Portland’s District 122.
“As the late, great Democrat and Speaker of the House Tip O’Neill once said, all politics is local,” commented Deborrah Jabar, chair of the South Portland Democratic City Committee. “This is an opportunity for local democrats to come out and meet their neighbors, candidates and legislators to talk about the issues that are important to them and their families. It gives our local leaders an opportunity to hear their constituent’s concerns, and for all of us to organize support for the fall campaigns, to ensure Democratic victories in November up and down the ticket. This is without a doubt the most critically important election of our lifetime and every vote will count.”
BBQ Picnic guests will be able to pick-up candidate campaign materials and information on how to volunteer for the coordinated and local campaigns. This much anticipated annual event encourages residents from South Portland, Cape Elizabeth and Scarborough to come and support Democratic candidates and celebrate with their friends and neighbors.
